Policeman burnt in apartment fire

A police officer posted at the Port of Spain CID is now fighting for his life after more than half his body was burnt during a fire which ignited on Sunday afternoon.

According to reports the police officer was with a 33-year-old woman and her six-year old son when the blaze broke out in one of the bedrooms of an apartment, located at Oropune Gardens, Piarco.

The police officer was caught in the fire, but the woman and child escaped by climbing out of the window of the apartment, and lowering themselves onto a floor below theirs. Fire and emergency services were then called and fire officers contained the blaze to the living room and kitchen of the apartment.

He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he was placed in intensive care. Police officers were told that he suffered from burns to 56 percent of his body.

President of the Police Social and Welfare Association refrained from commenting on the situation, saying that he was waiting for more information to come to his office before making a statement.
