Cordon, Subandhi prevail at CAREBACO Open

Kevin Cordon of Guatemala and Jamie Subandhi of the United States prevailed in the respective men’s and women’s singles finals, as the 2017 CAREBACO (Caribbean Regional Badminton Competition) Open ended on Friday night at the National Racquet Centre, Tacarigua. Cordon, the second seed, was made to fight hard by top seed Karan Rajan Rajarajan of India but he eventually triumphed 21-19, 21-18.

And the number one ranked Subandhi rallied from a set down to defeat fourth seed Daniela Macias of Peru 20-22, 25-23, 21-9. Macias redeemed herself later on to take the women’s doubles crown – in tandem with countrywoman Danica Nishimura.

The Peruvians – the top-seeded pair in the division, whipped Dominican Republic’s Nairoby Jimenez and Licelott Sanchez 21-19, 21-12. There was a bit of success for the Caribbean region, as the Jamaican duo of Gareth Henry and Samuel O’Brien Ricketts fought back from one set down to beat the American third-seeded twosome of Phillip Chew and Ryan Chew 12-21, 21-14, 21-12 to capture the men’s doubles trophy.

And, in the mixed doubles, Nishimura and Daniel La Torre Regal, the top-seeded tandem, breezed past the fourth-seeded pair of Bruno Barrueto Deza and Ines Castillo 21-16, 21-9 in an all-Peru decider.
