Arima Mayor

Arima Mayor Lisa Morris-Julian yesterday expressed outrage and her hope for a speedy resolution to allegations of fraud at the Arima Borough Corporation.

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Kazim Hosein, disclosed on Tuesday that three cheques amounting to close to $1.5 million were stolen from the corporation last Friday afternoon and cashed.

He said one person is in police custody and the matter is being investigated by the Fraud Squad. In a statement yesterday, Mayor Morris-Julian said the corporation’s Chief Executive Officer alerted her immediately when the theft was discovered and the minister was contacted.

She said the corporation is cooperating fully with the Fraud Squad to ensure that they can conduct a thorough and unhindered investigation and bring this matter to a swift conclusion.
