POLICE OFFICER WOUNDED

A police constable with five years’ service is now being treated at hospital for a gunshot wound, after he confronted two gunmen on Lady Young Road.

According to police, PC Smith, who is assigned to the administration building, was driving a marked police vehicle along Lady Young Road, at about 3.15 pm on Monday, when he received information that two men with firearms were seen nearby. Smith checked and saw the two men in a bushy area off the road. He confronted the men, and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

During the exchange, he was shot in the upper left arm. Smith called for backup as the men escaped. Other police officers responded to the call, and took Smith to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Police officers are now searching the area for the two gunmen. Investigations are ongoing.
