A NEW-look Trinidad and Tobago squad will oppose Barbados in today’s opening fixture of the 2007 Digicel Caribbean Cup finals at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Densil Theobald, the lone member of the 2006 World Cup squad included in Wim Rijsbergen’s team, is tipped to don the captain’s armband for the national team.

Kick-off time is 6 pm.

The other match of the double-header, in the Sedley Joseph Group, will feature French-speaking nations Haiti against Martinique at 8.30 pm. The other group, the Bobby Sookram Group, will get going at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella on Sunday with Cuba playing Guadeloupe and Guyana opposing St Vincent/Grenadines.

All eight teams are vying for a US$120,000 first prize, with the four semi-finalists assured of spots in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, scheduled from June 6 to 24 in the United States.

With the unavailability of the British-based professionals, Rijsbergen have also been forced to overlook a number of players from CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh.

The Jabloteh stars were not granted permission by their bosses to make themselves available for the 12-day tournament, and will instead focus their attention on this month’s CONCACAF Club Championships. But the opportunity is there for a number of TT recruits to become household names in Trinidad and Tobago football.

They include US-based club and collegiate players Scott Sealy, Leslie “Tiger” Fitzpatrick, Osei Telesford, Joel Bailey, Darryl Roberts, Abiola Clarence, Kwame Wiltshire, Keeron Benito, Anthony Noreiga and Makan Hislop.

Jan-Michael Williams, Marvin Phillips and Dwayne Jack will be seeking to establish their places on the national team while the enigmatic pair of Gary Glasgow and Kerwyn “Hardest” Jemmott have the chance, once and for all, to show their talents in a youthful TT outfit.

Entry fee is $50 for covered stands and $20 uncovered.
