Njisane suffers shock loss as Bramble wins keirin gold

NICKOLAI MADRAY Sunday, August 13 2017

THE NATIONAL Elite and Under-23 Track Cycling Championships excitement continued on Friday at the National Cycling Centre (NCC), Couva, and the crowd were treated to spectacular races from the national cyclists.

Teniel Campbell showed her impressive form while Njisane Phillip suffered a shocking defeat, after he lost his footing from the pedal, in his pet event.

The highly anticipated Menís Keirin Final saw the top six finalists lining up for the last event on the night and included the likes of Phillip (Rigtech Sonics), Keron Bramble (Rigtech Sonics), Quincy Alexander (Team DPS), Nicholas Paul (Breakaway), Kwasi Browne (AWCC) and Haseem Mclean (Unattached).

Bramble pulled off the upset on the night after he trumped all the favourites in the race. With two laps remaining, Phillip sped off the top and opened a huge lead, leaving the remainder of the bunch scrambling to catchup.

However, when there was just a half a lap left for the two-time Olympian to get across the finish- line, Philip unexpectedly cut off in what seemed as though his feet got detached from his pedals.

Bramble grasped the opportunity to snatch the gold after he was left free to reign, despite the efforts of a quickly closing pair in Alexander and Browne.

Alexander and Browne secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively, as Phillip strolled in behind Paul to finish in fifth.

It was a clean Sweep by Team PSL Cycle Club in the Menís Points race event when the trio of Akiel Campbell, Varun Maharajh and Jovian Gomez captured the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The endurance race consisted of 120 laps and Campbell was able to accumulate 63 points at the end whereas his closest rival, Maharajh, secured 47 points. Junior cyclist Lorenzo Orosco had a solid race, showing that he is ready to battle with the bunch of elite cyclists bagging a total of 46 points. Unfortunately, Orosco was not able to get a medal since he is a junior competing at the elite event, so Jovian Gomez took the bronze with his 29 points.

In the Womenís Points race (80 laps) Teniel Campbell, like her brother, won the gold medal and also accumulated a total of 63 points. Silver medallist Cheyenne Awai (Unattached) was only able to accumulate 16 points while the bronze medal went to Alexi Costa of Heatwave after she scored 14 points in the event.

Teniel also claimed gold in the Womenís Keirin final, showing depth in her talent, as the race ended in a close sprint to the finish-line. Campbell held off Breakaway Cycling Clubís duo of Kollyn St George, who pedalled to second, and bronze medalist Dominique Lovell, in the race.

The cycling championships will be in action at the NCC today from 11 am to 5 pm. Admission is free to the public during the morning session and but fans will have to pay $20 for the evening session.
