Lewis stars in Diamond T20 opener

Monday, July 15 2013

Evin Lewis’ stellar knock of 98 combined with Nicholas Sookdeosingh’s 40-run contribution propelled S&J Rapids to an emphatic 108-run win over New Generation as the opening match of the F&E Diamond United Twenty20 (DPL) tournament bowled off at the Kennedy Park Grounds, Diamond, last week.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, S&J Rapids went on to pile on a hefty total of 230 for nine after their 20 overs. Despite an impressive five-wicket haul (5/19) from A Mohammed, the New Generation bowlers could do little to stop the charge of Lewis and Sookdeosingh.

Lewis had a positive start to his DPL campaign falling just two runs short of his century, slamming 98 off just 70 balls, while Sookdeosingh’s knock was cut short due to a precise run-out throw from the boundary by Larry Guevarro.

In reply, New Generation could only muster up 122 for the loss of five after their 20 overs faced. Keron Kanhai top scored with 22 while Guevarro chipped in with 18. D Sultan was the pick of the bowlers for S&J Rapids as he picked up two for 14.

In other matches, two fine spells from Damien Bilwah (4/7) and Brian Maharaj (3/12) handed Pills and Beyond Super Kings a strong 80-run win over Debe Youth Foundation. Batting first, the former amassed 147 for the loss of six, led by Ranga Latchana’s knock of 48 and Nigel Gayasingh’s contribution of 28. Shastri Maharaj was Debe’s best bowler bagging two for 34.

In their turn at the crease, Debe Youth Foundation were quickly dismissed for a paltry 67, due to precise spells from Binwah and Maharaj. Al Pascal was their top scorer with 17 runs.

Matches continue this week.
