Umpires convention at Cascadia Hotel

Thursday, June 27 2013

TRINIDAD and Tobago will play hosts when cricket umpires from around the Caribbean gather for their biennial convention starting on Sunday at the Cascadia Hotel and Conference Centre, St Annís.

Lalman Kowlessar, president of the TT Umpires and Scorers Council said approximately 200 participants are expected for the important meeting, the highlight of which will be the election of officers to conduct the affairs of the organisation for the next two years.

The Windies umpires are currently led by Jamaican Cecil Fletcher. Trinidadian Clyde Cumberbatch is head of the Examination Committee.

Kowlessar, the second vice-president of the TT Cricket Board said apart from the six regional cricket organisations there will be umpires from the United States, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands attending the convention.

The umpires will start proceedings with an interfaith service starting at 9 am on Sunday at Cascadia after which the visitors will be treated to visit to the Wildfowl Trust Pointe-a-Pierre.

On Monday, the umpires will get down to business after an official opening ceremony starting at 9 am at which president of the TT Cricket Board Azim Bassarath will deliver the feature address.

Kowlessar said that it will be the second time TT will be hosting the regional umpires convention having done so 16 years ago at the Reinzi Complex in Couva. The umpires will conclude their convention on July 6.
