Bodoe proud of PowerGen all-local team

By STEPHON NICHOLAS Friday, May 31 2013

POWERGEN Penal Sports Club coach, Baldath Bodoe, says his team’s victory in the 2013 national two-day and Twenty20 competitions was even more of an impressive achievement considering that his team is dominated by local players.

Compared to other clubs, PowerGen utilised an almost all-local cast for the majority of the season while still getting the desired results.

“I’m very proud of that and the club is too. Our policy the last five years is not to bring in much foreign players. We have a good youth structure in place and we believe we must give the young players an opportunity. There is a lot of talent in TT and this is the mistake clubs make. They patch with foreigners and take players from other clubs and think that it will bring them success but the secret is building a team,” he declared.

Bodoe noted that by sticking with local-based players, they were able to develop a sense of cohesion and camaraderie on the field.

‘If you have players from different backgrounds just being thrown together randomly then you don’t bond as a team and play good cricket. When we won the league and T20 title in 2009/2010, we did it with local players. From that time, we’ve had a lot of young players coming up and doing well,” he continued.

Bodoe, whose team finished second to Queen’s Park in the league and 50 over competitions in 2011 and 2012, admitted that those defeats hurt them considerably and also inspired them to work even harder.

“It meant a lot because the guys were really hungry and started to get tired of being beaten by Queen’s Park. It wasn’t about the prize money; it was more about pride and passion. Noone likes a team to dominate them like that,” he pointed out.

The PowerGen coach also showered praises on team manager, Chaitram Ramjitsingh, for sustaining the right environment his team needed to be successful.

“PowerGen are like a family and Chaitram is a great manager. He makes sure the players are all settled and comfortable. I must give credit to him for the job he’s done,” he added.

Asked how difficult it will be to sustain their seat at the summit of the domestic throne, Bodoe acknowledged that repeating as successful season is always a challenge for any team.

“It’s going to be difficult. There is so much cricket going on all over the world that we will lose players from time to time. It was difficult for us playing without our captain (Samuel) Badree who was in the Indian Premier League. It was hard for me as a coach because Badree is such a motivator in the team. Gregory (Mahabir) was asked to take over and he did a good job. Young players after winning titles tend to relax but we have to keep them motivated. We have an indoor facility about 80 percent complete and when that is finished we will get the boys there to prepare for the next season,” he explained.

The coach expressed gratitude to his team’s fans especially the die-hard ones who were present at their games throughout the season.

“The support we got was tremendous. You saw at Guaracara Park, the fans coming with tassa. There are certain fans who don’t miss a single game in none of the versions,” he pointed out. He also paid tribute to their sponsor, PowerGen, who have stayed by their side and believe in their sporting project.

“The company has been a real driving force behind us,” he concluded.
