PowerGen coach says league wide open

By STEPHON NICHOLAS Wednesday, May 1 2013

DESPITE boasting a 24-point advantage at the top of the Premier Division standings with just two rounds to go, Baldath Bodoe, coach of current leaders PowerGen, says the league is still wide open.

Speaking to Newsday yesterday, Bodoe emphatically denied that his team has already sewn up the title and Moosai, Clarke Road United and defending champions Queen’s Park all are in the title race.

PowerGen top the table on 183 points while Moosai (159), Comets (157) and Queen’s Park (153) trail in that order.

And with PowerGen facing Moosai and Comets in their final fixtures, Bodoe knows his team has a difficult task to close off their campaign.

“Realistically, the tournament is still wide open. We are 24 points ahead but anything can happen.

In the last two rounds, Queen’s Park have two of the easier games (against Esmeralda and F&E Diamond United) so they are still in it. Comets and Moosai are there too.

We think the tournament can go right down to the wire,” he pointed out.

Nevertheless, Bodoe says his team is staying confident and will go for victory in their remaining matches.

“We come up versus Comets this weekend and we hope the weather doesn’t interfere with play. We can get maximum points and we have to go for it if we want to win the Championship.

We will be at home and we will feel comfortable.

Against Moosai it’s going to be tough but we tend to play good cricket at their ground,” he explained.

Asked what was the main reason for his team’s consistent showing this season, Bodoe cited their team spirit and balanced line-up.

“We’ve been playing good cricket even though we’ve missed a lot of players.

Our captain (Samuel) Badree has not been with us (as he’s in the IPL), we’ve also had to do without Sherwin Ganga, Jason Mohammed, Kavesh Kantasingh and Denesh Ramdin. We’ve been using some of our younger players and it’s been a total team effort.

It’s not about one or two players, it’s about going out there and perform.

The management is pleased with the performance of the players,” he declared.

Commenting on what it would mean to dethrone two-time domestic treble winners Queen’s Park, Bodoe revealed that it would be a great accomplishment for his team to once again be the best two-day team in the country.

“It will be good. Prior to the last two years we were the champions, we were right there. It will be great to regain that top position from them,” he said.
