Solozano elated with four-day call-up

By KEVIN SUNICH Thursday, April 25 2013

Seventeen-year-old Jeremy Solozano is expected to get his chance to play for the national cricket team when they clash with defending champions Jamaica in the semi-final of the Regional Four-Day tournament in Jamaica from May 2-5.

The Hillview College Lower-Six student has been drafted into the squad at the expense of former West Indies opening batsman Adrian Barath who had a horrid showing with the bat this season.

Solozano, who also plays for Queen’s Park, was hoping to make the national team earlier in the season, but his hopes were dashed as he suffered a slight groin strain.

The injury occurred while playing for the league champions Hillview against Carapichaima East in a match in which he scored 107, his second century of the tournament.

The TT U-19 player said the call-up to the team was a pleasant surprise. “I did not expect to be given a chance at this point but I think I will be able to carry through with my confidence from this season. I have been scoring runs locally so far this season and I will take that confidence to Jamaica and try to bat as long as possible and play each ball on its merit,” said the left-hander.

While he is confident, the slimly built batsman says he is a bit nervous about possibly making his debut in such a high profile encounter.

“Everybody must have their little butterflies and eventually I will overcome it once I go out there and play my normal game, taking it one ball at a time,” he said.

Coach of Hillview College, Richard Kelly, is confident though that his opener will repay the selectors for choosing him.

“A number of cricketers around the world have done it at his age or just smaller and he has what it takes to make it. He is an excellent player, very determined and I feel once he applies himself he will do well.

“It takes a certain type of individual to go out there and fight for your innings and he definitely has what it takes. We are all proud of him, his teammates, his schoolmates, his teachers and the vice-principal and principal, everyone is happy for him,” said Kelly.

Meanwhile his father, Michael, said he is humbled by his son’s call-up to the TT squad.

“It is good that the selectors have looked in his direction. Jeremy works very hard and selecting him on the team is worth the try.”

Solozano, along with club-mate Akeal Hosein, are the two uncapped players in the TT squad for the all-important clash.

The twin-island team, which went down to Jamaica in three days before going under to Barbados in two, will be hoping to change their fortunes.

Squad:

Denesh Ramdin (captain), Lendl Simmons, Jeremy Solozano, Jason Mohammed, Kjorn Ottley, Akeal Hosein, Steven Katwaroo, Imran Khan, Rayad Emrit, Amit Jaggernauth, Yannic Carriah, Shannon Gabriel and Marlon Richards.
