Caribs survive Harvard test

By KEVIN SUNICH Tuesday, August 7 2012

DEFENDING champions Caribs got the better of rivals Harvard 17-10 in their TT Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) Toyota Championship Division League match at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Saturday.

It was sweet revenge for Caribs who lost their Ruggerama title to the Tragarete Road based Harvard 12-7 last month. The teams were locked at 5-5 at the end of the first half, as Joseph Quashie put his time on the scoreboard, after Jamal Clarke had given the defending champions the lead.

The second half however, belonged to the Caribs as they outscored their opponents 12-5 with tries from Miguel Lara and AC Wright. Wright’s try was converted by Don Rojas. Harvard, who set a record for the biggest victory margin 162-0 against Police in their previous match, got their lone second half try from Jerome O’Brien. This was the third straight win for the defending champions which pushed them to14 points from three matches. They however did not get an extra point since they did not score four tries, while Harvard got a bonus point for not losing by more than seven points. They are second in the standings on 11 points from three matches.

Meanwhile Royalians hammered Police 62-5 at the St James Barracks. The winners got four tries from Jerome Maxime, two each from Ryan Fredericks and Ronald Mayers, while Jerome Poontit and Justin Mc Clean had one each. The law enforcement team got their lone try from Roberto Wellington.

Saturday’s Results

Caribs RFC 17 vs Harvard 10 - Savannah 3

Police 5 vs Northern 62 - St. James Barracks

Royalians vs Rainbow 1 - To be rescheduled to August 18, 2012
