$upport needed for Trumpet card

Sunday, July 15 2012

Floyd Trumpet Fight Productions promoter, Joana Balgobin is calling on corporate Trinidad and Tobago and business enthusiasts to “throw their hat in” for one of the most billed fights in the local boxing industry.

The event is being dubbed as “Ultimate Fight I”, and the main event will feature local boxer Kevin “The Undertaker” Placide going up against his more than willing compatriot, Floyd Trumpet. This special boxing card is expected to punch off at the Jerry Junction Sports Bar, Waterloo, Carapichaima, on July 28, from 8pm.

According to a highly motivated Placide, he intends to send “Trumpet to his rightful place, the cemetery.” The 38-year-old has been referring to July 28 as judgment day for Trumpet and an abrupt end to his boxing career. Placide also explained that he would annihilate him this time around. The local boxer boasted of his competitive record which currently stands at 12 wins, six losses and one draw. “The Undertaker” insists that once he steps into the ring with Trumpet, his winning record will surely move to 13.

Balgobin indicated that there has been a lot of banter surrounding this fight as each boxer has come out swinging since the launch of the card at Mangoes on the Brian Lara Promenade, Port-of-Spain, recently.

The boxing promoter indicated that corporate sponsorship is crucial to the event and that she has contacted over 25 organisations to assist her, of which the responses have been poor. She explained that financial assistance is greatly needed to ensure the event takes place, but so far, all attempts haven proven futile.

Balgobin indicated that this event was rescheduled once before, due to a lack of financing. She is appealing to corporate TT to support the boxers in their quest of becoming world champions. The much anticipated bout has also been approved by the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board of Control.

When asked if the Ministry of Sport has assisted financially, Balgobin also indicated she has tried on several occasions to contact the Ministry of Sport for assistance to no avail and is now forced to reduce the size of her undercard. A very determined Balgobin however, stated that she is not letting up and will ensure the event is a success. Tickets have already gone on sale at the Jerry Junction Sports Bar, BodyWorld (Centre City Mall, Chaguanas) and Ultimate Gym, Montrose, Chaguanas. Anyone willing to assist this event can call 482-5567.
