HARVARD CLUB dethroned Caribs Rugby Club to clinch the Solomon Hochoy Cup, as the 2012 Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) season began at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.

Harvard prevailed 12-7 on July 7 to take home the title for the first time in their history, and earn a measure of revenge against Carib, after they were beaten 10-5 in last year’s version.

Larry Mendez, coach of the Harvard Club, said, “It’s going to be a tough season. It’s going for the players to come away with the win after losing to Caribs last year.”

Mendez is also the Trinidad and Tobago coach and he is looking forward to the 2013 Sevens Rugby World Cup as well as the 2012 North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Sevens Championships, which will run from August 25-27 at the Twin Elm Park, Ottawa, Canada. “There are some challenges but, once the players know that, there is a time for everything,” he said. “Compete hard against each other in club competitions but when national duty calls, put country first.

“I am fully aware that there are some individuals who will allow their personal and club views to negatively impact their national effort,” Mendez added. “Fortunately they are in the minority.”
