Stampfli stays perfect at ‘Nationals’

Wednesday, July 4 2012

Top seed, Breana Stampfli, hammered Ma-Ling Goodridge in straight sets to book her passage into the next round of the Women’s Singles as action continued in the National Open Championship late Monday evening at the Eddie Taylor Public Courts, King George V Park, St Clair. Stamplfi, the overwhelming favourite for the crown, had no trouble against Goodridge who conceded the match 6-0, 6-0.

Trevine Sellier also looks in good touch, taking care of Charmaine Dookie similarly 6-0, 6-0. Kezia Koroma defeated Cheyenne Chin- Choy comfortably as well, winning the opening set 6-1 and repeating the effort in the second set.

In men’s action, contender, Liam Gomez dispatched John Furlonge in just two sets to advance to the second round. Furlonge was no match for Gomez who clinched the opener without dropping a game and was equally flawless in the second set to wrap up the match.

Scott Hackshaw had to dig deep to get past Che Sanchez, however, in an exciting three-setter. Hackshaw won the first set 6-4 but Sanchez rallied to level the match with a 2-6 win in the following set. Hackshaw and Sanchez fought valiantly for the deciding set which eventually went to tie-breaks with Hacksaw prevailing 7-6 (8).

Rain continued to hamper play yesterday with matches starting just after 6pm. Former Men’s Singles champion, Lend Smith was scheduled to meet Nabeel Mohammed in round two while Yohansey Williams was in action with Shaquille Bernard up to press time.
