Sarwan confident in Guyana outfit

By JOEL BAILEY Thursday, March 15 2012

FORMER WEST Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan is confident that the visiting Guyana squad can prevail against host Trinidad and Tobago in this weekend’s Regional Four Day Tournament Sixth Round meeting at the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.

Guyana are second in the seven-team table with 36 points from five games, while Trinidad and Tobago are in third spot with 28 points from four fixtures.

The Guyana squad held a lengthy practice session at the Oval nets yesterday and the ex-WI captain declared, “we’re pretty confident.

“To beat Barbados in Barbados is a big plus for us, because they’ve been playing well,” Sarwan continued. “We’ve been playing really (good) cricket.

“I think the good thing about us this year is that the younger guys, or the guys who’ve been around for a while are starting to perform,” he added. “Usually, when myself and Shiv (captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul) are not playing, we tend to get bowled out very cheaply.

“But it’s really pleasing to see the guys scoring a lot of runs, like (Assad) Fudadin, (Narsingh) Deonarine and (Leon) Johnson. Hopefully, they can continue.”

“We’ve done really well although we’ve had difficult circumstances,” he said, referring to the fact that Guyana have to play their home games in Dominica due to a battle for the reins of power among the Guyana Cricket Board and Guyana government.

“I thought the guys really played well, they’ve stood up very strong in terms of mentally and they were able to perform under difficult circumstances,” said Sarwan. “I think it’s important we focus on one step at a time and we don’t want to be thinking too far ahead.

“We’ve got Trinidad now. It’s important that we play well. We know Trinidad play well at home so it’s important we take it stage by stage and hopefully we’ll have a good game.”

Asked about the TT team, minus captain Denesh Ramdin, Dwayne and Darren Bravo, Ravi Rampaul, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Lendl Simmons, Sarwan replied, “I don’t think you can underrate anyone. I think they’ve got very talented players.

“I think it’s just a matter of getting everyone to perform and do it on a consistent basis,” he continued. “If everyone can contribute, they’ll be able to compete.

“ The likes of Dwayne, Pollard and Narine, those players would be missed. You have to face facts. I think it’s important for us to play safely.

“We don’t want to take anyone for granted. It’s important we play well as a team.”
