Opposition stays on Warner case

By Andre Bagoo Tuesday, August 28 2012

THE OPPOSITION yesterday once more called on Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams to give an update on the status of a reported investigation of bribery allegations tied to National Security Minister Jack Warner.

At a press conference at the Office of the Opposition Leader, Charles Street, Port-of-Spain, Opposition Senator Fitzgerald Hinds said he would write Williams, yet again, seeking an update on the matter. Hinds is expected to despatch a letter today.

Hinds wrote Williams on August 16, seeking an update in allegations that cash bribes were paid out at a meeting of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain, in May 2011 during a visit by then FIFA presidential candidate Mohammad bin Hammam.

Hinds asked Williams to state “whether there have been any further development in this regard or whether investigations are continuing.”

Hinds revealed yesterday he received a response from Williams last week.

“Your letter dated August 15, 2012, on the subject matter refers and the contents have been noted,” Williams wrote in the response. “I will provide you with a detailed response in due course.”

Of this, Hinds said, “I don’t know what ‘in due course’ means. I propose to write the Commissioner of Police again to ask him to tell me a little more.”

“We have deep concerns about the independence of the police organisation and its constitutional role especially in the face of a rampant Jack Warner,” Hinds said. He made his statements as the Opposition called on Williams to explain his intervention in the case of former Minister in the Ministry of National Security Collin Partap on Sunday morning. Partap was not charged up to yesterday, according to sources.
