2nd Drummit to Summit Sunday, April 26 2009
The Truth Drummers who were responsible for hosting the first Drummit2Summit event at the St James Amphitheatre on April 18 plan to have another drumming event.
The event received national attention after riot police disrupted and prevented them from continuing after they were told that their drumming was illegal.
In a release yesterday the organisers said that their intention last weekend was to share the contradictions between the draft “Declaration of Commitment” placed by Trinidad and Tobago before Heads of Americas states for signature and the reality facing the national community of Trinidad and Tobago.
Activists from communities around the country were going to make their declarations on Summit themes of sustainability, security and prosperity, Truth Drummers said. They were also going to ceremonially welcome and seat the Cuban drum in the circle of drums representing all nation states of the Americas. Michael Parris, environmentalist, who participated in the last event said that they felt they did not get the opportunity to finish what they started.
“A lot of declarations had to be made, we had quite a few people carded to speak and they did not get the chance to so we thought it was important that we held another one,” he said.
Parris felt confident that there would not be any interruptions the second time around.
“I am sure we would not be stopped this time around because we are not doing anything illegal. It is not titled a protest, it is just a gathering where people can come and share their views and air their voice,” he said. The second drummit2summit is planned for May 23.
