A FEMALE motorist had a close brush with death when her car began smoking and suddenly burst into flames along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway yesterday.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at about 12 noon near the Valsayn intersection. Police said the woman, whose name was not released, told investigators that she had just left her La Horquetta home; upon reaching Valsayn she noticed that smoke was coming from her B14 motorcar.

The woman, police said, pulled on to the side and had just time enough to exit the vehicle when it burst into flames. Fire appliances from the San Juan Fire Station responded and were able to extinguish the blaze.

A party of officers also responded on the scene where they carried out preliminary investigations. The incident caused a massive traffic pile-up. Investigators are unsure as to what caused the car to ignite and are continuing investigations.
