Three in court for Latifah’s stolen jewelry

By KARL E CUPID Tobago Bureau Friday, January 16 2009

Kevon Bayne, 35, of Riseland Trace, Bethel, Tobago, was yesterday granted $300,000 bail by Scarborough Senior Magistrate Annette McKenzie when he appeared in court on a series of charges, including larceny of US $10,000 worth of jewelry belonging to Grammy Award-winner, Queen Latifah at Stonehaven Villas on December 28, last.

Latifah, the Hollywood star, had been holidaying in Tobago with friends when the items of jewelry — two rings and an ID band — were stolen from the villa where she and her entourage had been staying.

Bayne is charged, separately, with larceny at a dwelling house, assault with intent to rob, robbery with violence, and house-breaking and larceny, arising from a series of break-ins and robberies at Stonehaven Villas last month. Also appearing in court yesterday on charges in connection with the matter, were Daniel Moe, 38, head of E-Secure Security Services (which provides security at Stonehaven), and Carlene Antoine, 23, both of Gaskin Bay Road, Bon Accord. Moe and Antoine are charged separately with receiving stolen items, and were placed on $50,000 and $35,000 bail, respectively.

When the three appeared before Magistrate Joan Gill late Wednesday afternoon they had been remanded in custody until yesterday. Queen Latifah’s jewelry was among a quantity of jewelry, cash and other personal items reportedly recovered by police.

Bayne, Moe and Antoine are to reappear in court next week. Meanwhile, it was reported that another suspect was being sought in the matter.
