TWO POLICEMEN were granted $200,000 bail each by a Tunapuna Magistrate before whom they appeared on a charge of robbery with violence.

Corporal Nirmal Ramjattan, 35, of Arima, a policeman for the past 12 years and Special Reserve Policeman Constable Kitson Wynne, 32, of Trincity who has been a policeman for the past five years, stood before Magistrate Gloria Jasmath in the Second Court charged with robbing Tunapuna bakery owner Horace Seedansingh of cash and valuables amounting to $170,000 on April 6.

The charge alleges that the officers, armed with guns, along with another person, robbed Seedansingh of $90,000, his Nissan car valued $70,000, US$680, a bank card, which was later used to withdraw $5,000 and a Motorola cellphone valued $1,100. The charge was laid indictably by Sgt Jude Worrel.

Both accused officers worked in a Special unit of the Tunapuna Police Station. The court’s public gallery was packed with relatives of the accused officers and reporters.

At 9.35 am both officers walked into the court and into the prisoner’s dock where they faced Jasmath with their hands clasped behind their backs. Rajiv Persad represented Cpl Ramjattan while Richard Clarke-Wills and Shawn Fulchan were counsel for Wynne.

The case was adjourned to June 23.
