SINGING the uplifting calypso, “Our children, our future”, which urged parents to safeguard their children from the many evils of society, Carapichaima Roman Catholic Primary School student Jerod Griffith, was adjudged winner of the San Fernando City Corporation (SFCC) Junior Calypso Monarch after a competition held yesterday at Harris Promenade amphitheatre in San Fernando.

Griffith, a standard five student who will write the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) exam later this year, beat thirteen other contestants, some much older than himself, to win the coveted title.

Speaking to reporters after accepting the winner’s trophy — which is almost as tall as he is — a clearly overwhelmed Griffith said he still could not believe he had emerged victorious as he kept muttering to himself: “I can’t believe this...I can’t believe this.”

After regaining his composure, Griffith added, “It is spectacular. I knew I would place in a good position, but first place? I didn’t think I would have done this well.”

“I want to thank my mother Joy Griffith for her support and having such confidence in me,” Griffith said as he hugged his trophy.

Meanwhile, a proud Joy Griffith said she was “ecstatic” over her son’s victory saying, “I knew he had good competition but his message was needed and I am really happy for him.” In second place was COSTAATT student Sherisse Collymore with her composition, “The game we Play.”

The London brothers, Ronaldo and Rivaldo tied for third position. The elder brother, Ronaldo who attends Fyzabad Secondary school sang, “I’ve learnt to rise,” while Rivaldo, who attends Fyzabad Presbyterian Primary, sang “Parents.”

In his remarks San Fernando Mayor Dr Navi Muradali said the decision to relocate the competition from inside the City Auditorium to the amphitheatre was a resounding success and pointed to the large audience who sat in chairs under the trees for the duration of the competition.
