South mayor sends out stern warning

By STACY MOORE Wednesday, August 29 2012

LAMENTING over the state of the city of San Fernando since many delinquent private land owners have refused to maintain their vacant lots, resulting in overgrown bushes causing a threat to the public, San Fernando Mayor, Dr Navi Muradali, sent a stern warning that the law would now be enforced.

The mayor announced that if after14 days following the serving of notices, the lands are not cleaned, land owners would be charged and subsequently taken before a magistrate to answer to the charge.

Muradali was yesterday speaking at the 25th statutory meeting of the eight San Fernando City Council hosted at the Council Chambers, City Hall, Harris Promenade, San Fernando.

In previous times the mayor said, after 14 days the Corporation would clean the land of the overgrown bush, and charge the homeowner at the going rate in which would be added to their taxes. But this he said has changed, and now after 14 days the expired notice would be sent to the Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrate he said would then summons the owner of the land let them come and explain why they have refused to cut their land.

“We have started to enforce the laws regarding the maintenance of private overgrown vacant lots by starting legal proceedings. These private lots of land with over grown grass are a major problem, and have become a health hazard,” Muradali revealed.

Should these owners, the mayor said, do not comply after 14 days we would take these owners to the Magistrate Court.
