AN elderly couple had to be rescued from their Plum Mitan home as flood waters rose yesterday, making it unsafe for them.

Baldath Jaikaran and his wife Basdaye, who live alone, had to be evacuated by relatives as flood waters kept rising, following a downpour yesterday. Meterologist Oscar Lovell in a bulletin issued by the Meteorological Office, yesterday advised of prolonged periods of moderate to heavy showers which may lead to street/flash flooding.

The bulletin noted that parts of Trinidad, particularly northern and eastern areas, were experiencing cloudy/overcast conditions with periods of rain and showers, some of which were moderate to heavy.

The Jaikarans’ neighbours said the Plum Mitan area was prone to flooding, forcing some to stay indoors while others have to be evacuated and seek shelter elsewhere until the water receded.

Several other villagers were also left marooned following yesterday’s downpour in the eastern community.

Persons wanting to access the area had to do so via Biche.

Villagers said they have made several complaints to the Ministry of Works to have the road along the area raised so as to prevent the flood water crossing the roadway. Newsday attempted to find the Jaikarans yesterday but was unsuccessful.
