BRIAN MAC FARLANE is not the only mas man who achieved an unprecedented sixth consecutive years of Carnival mas titles. While Mac Farlane won the National Carnival Large Band of the Year title, veteran South Trinidad mas making couple Ivan and Wendy Kalicharan are also celebrating their band being named South Carnival Band of the Year, for the sixth consecutive year.
The Kalicharans’ presentation of We Going Carnival is also the 18th South Band of the Year title for the couple. Queen of the band Gloria Dallsingh with her portrayal Queen of the Masquerade Ball, who already holds the title of San Fernando Queen of Carnival was named Female Masquerader of the Year.
The results were announced yesterday by San Fernando Mayor Marlene Coudray during a press conference at the City Hall Auditorium, San Fernando. The couple will share in the $2 million subvention which the San Fernando City Corporation has received from the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism for 2012 Carnival.
Flanked on the head table by convener of San Fernando Carnival, Selwyn “Bunny” Persad, Chief Executive Officer of the San Fernando City Corporation Deodath Ragoobar and Councillor Anthony Ramkissoon, Coudray announced the list of winners in the various categories.
She was high in praise of Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Winston “Gypsy” Peters for increasing the 2012 subvention from the $1 million they got in 2011.
“My special thanks to Minister Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peters for really listening to the cries of San Fernando this year,” the Mayor said. Coudray said the Carnival committee will now “sit down” and reconfigure the prize structure to do justice to all of the winners.
Coduray said she was unhappy that south bandleaders were not being rewarded properly for their hard work. “I pointed to (the) minister that even the artistes who perform on our show make more money than people who make Carnival in San Fernando and that has to stop. Bandleaders who are sacrificing their time, talent and energy are not going home with a just amount and we sought to change that this year.”
An elated Kalicharan said he was ecstatic over the victory. “It is a great feeling. I mean to win an 18th title. You know, this is our sixth year straight (winning),” he said. The Kalicharans of Harris Street, San Fernando have been producing mas for more than five decades.
Bandleader of We People International Dawad Phillip whose presentation Down the Nile placed second, indicated his intention to stop playing mas in San Fernando. Phillip, who has been producing mas in San Fernando for the past seven years, said he believes his band is being discriminated against.
“It is not about sour grapes or anything like that...but where do I go from here? I don’t know. It could be my last year. Imagine it have people walking through my band trying to count members,” Phillip said.
