Aaron Duncan is joint winner with Timel Rivas

Defending Junior Calypso Monarch, Aaron Duncan, and ten-year-old Timel Rivas, on Wednesday emerged joint winners of the Calypso Pioneers competition, hosted by the National Youth Action Committee (NYAC), at the Jean Pierre Complex.
In another competition – Calypso Jewels – staged at the same venue by the NYAC, was won by 14-year-old Ferdinand Smith
Duncan, when contacted by Newsday, said he felt good about his win which was his first for the 2011 Carnival season. The seven-year-old said, “It felt like a dream performing in the competition.” He expressed excitement heading into the Junior Calypso Monarch competition to defend his title.
“I am very confident because I have a good song,” he said. The young calypsonian will be competing for the first time in the Junior Soca Monarch.
Rivas said he knew he would have won the competition because he had good diction and his performance was better than some of his competitors. He said he was elated and also expressed excitement ahead of competing as a semi-finalist.
“I have another opportunity to win another junior calypso competition,” he said.
Smith is also a semi-finalist in the Calypso Monarch. He said while he is not accustomed to entering competitions, he felt very great about winning Calypso Jewels. He added, while the Calypso competition will be challenging, he felt confident about his performance.
The results are as follows:
1st place – Aaron Duncan – Newtown Boys’ R.C. – Kaiso Alive
1st place – Timel Rivas – Rosary Boys’ R.C. – When You See a Camera
3rd place – Rivaldo London – Fyzabad Presbyterian – What’s Your Plan
4th place – N’Janela Regis – St Agnes Anglican Primary – Ah Want One
