Stagnant pool on Lady Hailes Avenue a health hazard

Monday, September 6 2010

FOR MORE than ten years, rain or sun, a stagnant pool at the corner of Lady Hailes Avenue, San Fernando, has been a health hazard to nearby residents.

According to the residents, improper drainage has contributed to the pool of putrid water which is infested with mosquito larvae.

“The water has always been there but it is worse now,” said one disgruntled resident. “There is more water than before and no one seems to care about the problem.”

He said that it did not matter whether there is rain or sun, as the stagnant water is always there. “Imagine that hot sun and you seeing this pool of stagnant water like it just had rain and when it rains there is more water in the pool seeping unto the road way,” he said. Another resident was concerned the stagnant water was a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“Look at how many people are in the hospital with dengue and they taking this so lightly. This pool is infested with mosquitoes and larvae and a lot of residents could get sick.” he complained.

“You can’t sleep without spraying the house and using mosquito coils to try to get rid of the mosquitoes and that and all not even working. Like the mosquitoes find a way to resist these things that are supposed to kill them.”

The residents said they have made numerous complaints to the San Fernando City Corporation but there had been no action to deal with the problem. Attempts to get a comment from corporation officials on the problem were futile.
