Residents of flood prone areas in San Fernando and environs got a scare yesterday with heavy showers which came just after 1 pm yesterday.

The showers which were accompanied by thunder and lightning caused water in some areas to rise as high as four feet. Several homes experienced flooding. The water, however, quickly subsided in some areas.

At Scott Street, San Fernando, workers at a mechanic garage complained that once again they fell victim to the flood. The entire compound was flooded.

“This is the fifth time for the year we flood out,” a worker shouted. “We can’t do any work and like no one can solve this flooding problem. We need help.”

A few houses in Scotland Drive, Cocoyea, Caratal, Ste Madeleine and Tarouba were affected by flood waters yesterday. Also flooded were a few business places on High Street, San Fernando.

When Sunday Newsday visited, one Cocoyea resident said within 15 minutes of rainfall the water rose as high as four feet. “It came over the wall and into our apartments,” he said. The families used pumps and buckets to remove the water.

Councillor Darren McLeod told Newsday “about ten homes” were affected by the flooding.

He said: “Thank God it was not bad – the water went down quickly.”
