The Laventille Steelband Festival Foundation will host several events this weekend, beginning with a book and website launch today and their annual steelband street parade on Sunday.

“Another Side of Laventille” will be launched at 10 am today at the Angostura Glass Room, Angostura Street, Eastern Main Road, Laventille.

According to the Foundation’s Julien Cudjoe, the book is a compilation of material about the organisation and its activities for the past 13 years. According to a press release, the book reveals the positives of the Laventille community and depicts the work of the Laventille Steelband Festival Foundation within the community of Laventille.

Cudjoe listed some of these activities including pan camps, their March for Peace which began in 2005, the four editions of the biennial “Fabulous Eight of Hearts” pan concert staged so far, workshops for pan men and their award ceremonies to honour both the young and old achievers of Laventille. Categories for these award ceremonies include outstanding work in the community, outstanding work towards the development of pan for Seniors and awards in education and sport for Juniors. These award ceremonies have been taking place since 1999, Cudjoe said.

The website, www.laventillesteelbandfoundation.com, will make information and activities past and current available to all, Cudjoe added. The launch is expected to be attended by several ministers including National Security Minister, Jack Warner who would deliver the feature address, Community Development Minister Winston Peters and Multiculturalism Minister Dr Lincoln Douglas among others.

On Sunday, 35 steelbands will take part in the 14th Emancipation Steelband Street Parade which begins at 4 pm at the Panland Trinidad and Tobago Limited compound, corners Dorata Street and Eastern Main Road, Laventille.

A Military tattoo put on by the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force will begin proceedings. Panorama champions for 2012, Neal and Massy All Stars will lead the cast of steelpans participating in the parade which includes Petrotrin Phase 2, Excellent Stores Silver Stars, Republic Bank Exodus, Solo Harmonites, NLCB Fonclaire, WITCO Desperadoes, CAL Invaders, Pamberi, Laventille Sound Specialists, Laventille Serenaders and many more.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other government ministers have been invited to attend the street parade.
