A 61-year-old man was crushed to death yesterday by a crate loaded with glass, following what has been described as a “freak accident” in Sea Lots.

Police reported that at about 1 pm, Joseph Cyrus and 23-year-old Michael Haynes, were offloading panes of glass from a crate at the BH Rose Ltd compound on Abattoir Road, Sea Lots, when, without warning, the crate tipped over and fell on two men.

Upon hearing the noise, other workers on the compound ran over and moved the crate from on top of the men. They then rushed the two men to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. However, Cyrus was pronounced dead on arrival.

Haynes, of Blue Basin Road, Diego Martin, was treated immediately, and up to late yesterday, he was said to be in a serious, but stable condition. Newsday was informed by police that the young man had suffered two broken legs among other injuries.

Officers from the Besson Street Police Station visited the scene, and investigations are said to be continuing.

When Newsday visited Cyrus’ home yesterday on 12th Street, Barataria, relatives said they were very shocked over his death. It was said that Cyrus was a father of five — four boys and one girl — between the ages of 13 and 25, and was a very well loved and likeable person.

“He will genuinely be missed. He was a very easy going guy. Friendly and loving. He was just a genuinely caring man, and that is a rare, rare thing these days,” explained a male relative of the family.
