CROOK. Among the various meanings of “crook” are “rogue, swindler, dishonest or unscrupulous person.” A lot of righteous indignation has been dutifully banged against white-collar crooks. This attack, aimed at drug traffickers, money launderers, whisky smugglers, big-time bribe takers and corrupt politicians, is usually accompanied by an intriguing(...)

“Beam me up Scotty”, has now become so much a part of popular culture that we forget that those weren’t the actual order of the words. But who cares? The meaning is the same. ‘Beam me up’ and you are off and away on another planet or place. It was an expression many used in jest and for children it was a fascinating idea.

Last Sunday, when I wrote about the futility of our spinning tops in mud, I had a call from a fellow senior citizen. I had concluded that article by asking if “this time, this year, can we truly clean mud and filth from our lives?” However, while he said that he enjoyed the article, it had taken him “back in times” to one of my earlier rants .

OVER the years, I have met quite a few people whom society would refer to as “criminals,” “gangsters” or “community leaders.” Some of these people walk around in uniforms emblazoned with the logo of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service; some of them wear suits on a daily basis and can be seen congregating outside various courts across the country(...)

The sun is shining benignly out of a sky in which drifts a scattering of small, fluffy white clouds.

The release of the SE A results earlier this month threw into the spotlight one word which resonated among the top-achieving students and — had they been asked publicly — among the general body of the students: the word, ‘sacrifice’.
