THIRTY-ONE charities benefited from almost half a million dollars as Guardian Group presented 100 per cent of its proceeds from the SHINE 5K and 10K Charity Walk and Run, which was held on November 24 at Nelson Mandela Park, St Clair.

The event is Guardian Group's flagship charity fundraiser in TT, with over 5,200 participants this year. Guardian Group presented a total of $477,000 to the 31 charities at Guardian Group's head office in Westmoorings, yesterday.

Some of the charities that benefited from the event were Amica House Children's Home, Bridge of Hope, Just Because Foundation, Lady Hochoy Home, Rainbow Rescue, The Cotton Tree Foundation, Couva Children's Home and Crisis Nursery, Credo Foundation for Justice and PlayAble Caribbean.

Kerri-Ann Leon Sing of the Couva Children's Home and Crisis Nursery was thankful for the help.

"We are most appreciative since we deal with disadvantaged kids within the area of Couva and (the rest of) TT," Leon Sing said.

Sing said the money will go a long way to aiding their programme.

"We do have different plans (for the money), such as therapy for the kids and to support their various activities within the community and within their schools," he said.

Dale Bartholomew of Credo Foundation for Justice added, "Words can't express (how I feel)...what people don't understand is that in order to put out the best that we can do with the children, we have to get the funding, and funding is a real challenge right now."

Francine Lookhong of PlayAble Caribbean, a disability sport development non-profit organisation, said, "We are so happy (for the money) because we volunteer our time. All the equipment that we need, all of the courses that we need to do, this is going to go such a long way in getting a lot of stuff that the kids will need as well."

Keston Nancoo of Guardian Group was satisfied with the level of support for the event in November. Nancoo said, "We were even more heartened by the display of love, generosity and discretionary effort on the part of so many of you genuinely caring people. This, for us at Guardian, is a positive sign that we have so many persons in our society who are committed to assisting those who are less fortunate. This is the embodiment of the true human spirit, experienced every year through this signature event – SHINE."

Nancoo encouraged the charities to continue changing lives. "As you receive our contributions today, I encourage you to continue your good work. Yours is a thankless job and your passion to change the course of many is a selfless one that often goes unrecognised." Nancoo thanked One Caribbean Media, SM Jaleel and C&W Business for supporting SHINE 2018.
