TT must evolve to suit times

THE EDITOR: One remembers that Jesus had to remind his followers that, "Man was not made for the Sabbath; the Sabbath was made for man," so that although activity was prohibited on the Sabbath, man should not refrain from doing something to save his drowning child or his ox or ass on that day. If a child is drowning on the Sabbath, one will not be reluctant to save the life of that human being. Despite the law that prohibits work on that day, one must, of necessity, save that child’s life.

One must recognise that "man was not made for the constitution; the constitution was made for man" and it is, as with any other man-made document, subject to man’s shortcomings and the vagaries of our deficiencies in thought. We cannot foresee all eventualities, so that when new situations face us, we must adjust, as the new circumstances dictate.

Adjusting the constitution to comply with the "world organisations" is not trampling on any citizen’s rights, as suggested by the former prime minister. Refusing the adjustment does not protect any law abiding, honest citizen from anything or anybody. What it does is give additional rights in the form of protection, to the corrupt.

The UNC’s behaviour is a display of selfishness, irresponsibility as well as utter contempt, for the citizens of this country.
