Stop ruining beaches

THE EDITOR: Why do our governments destroy nature’s beauty – our beautiful beaches?

I recently returned from Tobago, our jewel in the sun. I love that island for some of the examples it should set for us here in Trinidad – its roads are good, there is no garbage to be seen, its beaches are amazing, though lately I’ve been saddened to find that Store Bay has been overtaken by a bar as one descends the steps to the beach. And now it’s expanding.

Let me be clear, I have no problem with the bar, I have no problem with most of the music it plays. When it become a problem is when the music is blasting to the point where you have to shout to the person sitting beside you. That’s a problem.

Last week I was in the sea when I heard a song with the following lyrics being repeated: “Stay out of my (so and so) business, leave me alone.” I was not the only horrified person.

They tell me this bar has the Tobago House of Assembly’s (THA) approval, and that many people have complained but, being true TT people, they complain to everyone around and not to the right people.

I have written a letter to both the THA and the Minister of Tourism hoping someone corrects this bombastic invasion of people’s enjoyment of the beach.

The disaster of Maracas is for another time, maybe. Oh our poor beaches. Those in power, please do something and stop ruining our beaches.
