Muslims in Tobago were last Thursday night commended for their discipline in fasting for the month of Ramadan and encouraged to hold firm to their beliefs.

Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles, in an address at Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, at the Majid al Tabwah in Lowlands, commended Muslims for the discipline of fasting for the month of Ramadan, which he said was no easy feat, and which allows one to remember the less fortunate in society.

“What is significant is the discipline that fasting generates. More than that, it allows you to, as it were, put yourself in the shoes of those who are less fortunate and, therefore engender and appreciate those who have less, and I think that is something that all of us in this country can learn from.

“Simply because over the years, as a result of the state of the economy, we have grown increasingly selfish and we have forgotten that there are those of us amongst us who need our help,” Charles said.

Also addressing Muslims gathered for the event, head of the masjid, Imam Mustapha Mohammed, urhed them to not let the efforts of the month end now that Ramadan has come to an end.

“Ramadan has left us, are we going to leave Ramadan, are we going to leave all those things that we strive to do for the pleasure of Allah?

“Let us continue to strive, let us continue to make an effort for the sake of the Almighty Creator, may Allah enable us for as long as we are alive, that we continue to serve him, that we continue to strive for his cause and that every day that goes by we become nearer and nearer to him,” he urged.
