UTT had toreduce staff

THE EDITOR: I am dismayed with the call by three Opposition Members of Parliament for the UTT Board to resign based on their belief that the university is experiencing financial problems because of a lack of proper management by the board.

It seems the MPs do not understand that the board has no other choice but to reduce staff, especially given the very tough economic conditions the country is facing. The board must be commended for having the courage to take the hard decisions to ensure the continued survival of the university for future generations.

Why didn’t the former board appointed by the PP government take the decisive action needed to prevent UTT from becoming stuck in this economic mess in the first place? Well, it did not and now the current board has been left with the difficult job of maintaining a high quality of tertiary education and keeping the institution alive.

At the end of the day, we must all recognise that UTT is a national institution which is critical to the continued development of the country and we need to support any initiative designed to ensure its continued survival.
