Advice for letter writers

THE EDITOR: My advice to letter writers is to steer clear of media outlets such as Facebook ,Twitter etc. If there is need to respond to any published article then address it directly to the editor of the relevant newspaper.

The editor or his appointed member of staff will then assess your letter and decide whether it is the interest of the public or his paper to publish it. The editor is then responsible for any legal backlash from the published article.

It is observed that in recent years comments made on articles in newspapers are directed to Facebook or other such media outlets.

The danger of using such outlets is that no one apparently checks the contents of your submitted letter before publishing it and there is a possibility of you being sued for libel. So beware.
