TT umpires dominate WI cricket exams

President of the Trinidad and Tobago Umpires and Scorers Association, Parasram Singh, has congratulated a trio of local umpires who excelled at the recent regional 2017 Practical and Oral Examinations.

Singh has heaped praises on Carlton Best (97 percent), Vicki Daniel (95 percent) and Afraz Mohammed (94 percent) who all placed in the top five.

“It is a tremendous achievement by the Trinidad and Tobago umpires to dominate the top placings in the highly competitive examination,” said Singh.

Best, Daniel and Mohammed placed third, fourth and fifth respectively among 35 candidates who sat the examination, and were among the 26 successful umpires who achieved the 80 percent required pass rate.

At the head of the class was Alexander Knight who recorded 97.5 percent to narrowly pip Roger Pittiman (97.33 per cent) of Canada into second place.

TT umpires also sitting the examination were Sewdan Singh (86 percent), Emmanuel Ramdeen (85.4 percent), Andel Mahon (82 percent), Frank Morgan (76.5 percent), Prakash Sonnyram (72.3 percent) and Hosein Khan (56 percent).

Singh said that he was impressed that Trinidad and Tobago continues to produce umpires of a high calibre and hopes they continue to progress and emulate the achievements of Joel Wilson who is on the ICC Elite Umpires Panel.

Chairman of the West Indies Cricket Umpires Association Examination Committee, Peter Nero, also from Trinidad and Tobago, who recently retired as a top regional umpire, attributed the success of the candidates to their hard work.

“This examination represents another step in your career to become the best you can be as an umpire. There is a lot of hard work ahead and I am sure with the assistance and support of colleagues, trainers and family members, all will be able to achieve their prescribed goals,” said Nero.

He also thanked other members of the WICUA Training Committee, the organization’s secretary, association trainers, practical examiners and all members associations who initially prepared the candidates.

“You all diligently participated in the execution of the examination and I want to thank you for your steadfast resolve and for making a success of this event,” stated Nero.

Participants sitting the examinations were from Barbados, Bermuda, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, the USA, and the Windward Islands.

Completing the top ten candidates in the examinations were Krishen Awdhan (93.08) of Canada; Jeff Lane (90.83) of the Leeward Islands; Flemroy Lambert (89.67) of Guyana; followed by Colin Edwards (89.16), and Imran Khan (88.33), both of the USA.

Nero was recently appointed by Cricket West Indies as manager/coach of the West Indies umpires, and ex-officio head of all training committees.
