A Mayaro mother of four attempted to open her front door on Sunday night to find out the cause of noises outside, but a bullet hit and stopped her.

Relatives told Newsday that Dianna Dhanassar, 38, fell to the ground and lost consciousness inside the family’s home at St Ann’s Road East, St Ann’s Village.

Her 15-year-old son Jacob Ali Bocas, who was behind her, was also hit.

Unknown to them at the time, gunmen had already shot and killed Jacob’s cousin Ryan Heeralal, 29, who was lying on a couch in the gallery.

Up to Monday afternoon, Dhanassar was unaware of the death and that her son was wounded.

Both mother and son, a form four student, were warded at the Sangre Grande hospital.

Dhanassar’s husband/ Jacob's father Anthony Ali Bocas said, "Right now, she has a 50-50 chance of surviving. Doctors told me not to tell her anything as yet until her condition improves. A bullet entered the side of her belly and came out through her back. My son was shot in both legs."

"Jacob knows she was shot and that my nephew died. The staff are Sangre Grande hospital are really nice people. They have been attending to my son and wife and have been polite to me."

Gunshots rang out at around 11.20 pm on Sunday. Before Heeralal, also called Not Nice and Rupert, took his last breath, he cried out, "They killing me (sic)."

The family was alerted, and it was while heading outside, the gunmen shot at the front and back doors before running away. Jacobs’ three siblings, 17, seven and three, were not hit but were "scared out of their minds."

Speaking at his home on Monday, Ali Bocas said, "I do not know what beef people had with my nephew. Ryan was a nice fella. He was a little loud, but if he would have helped anyone with anything, he would. Anyone is always welcome by me."

"I live good with people and my babies did not deserve to go through something like."

Heeralal often stayed at the house and at his mother’s home, a short distance away.

Heeralal’s grandfather David Suresh, 74, said when the shots rang out, he assumed it was crackers. He lives behind his son’s (Ali Bocas) home.

"I did not see anything but Mischief (the family’s dog) kept barking. I did not take it on because that dog always makes noise," Suresh said.

There were two bullet holes in the wooden front door and three in the back door.

Mayaro and Homicide Bureau Region II police are investigating.

No one has been arrested.
