POINT Fortin student-athlete Afrika Lewis, 17, has received a US basketball scholarship from Ranger College, in Texas. She is now seeking donations to assist in covering travel and registration expenses, among other things.

The former Point Fortin East Secondary School student told Newsday her father – Elieston – also played basketball, which inspired her to begin three years ago.

She plays both centre and power forward positions with Advanced Genetics Sports and Cultural Club of San Fernando.

The six feet, two inches tall athlete said she was informed of the scholarship approximately a month and a half ago.

“I was excited, elated, overwhelmed…It was always my dream to further my basketball career.

“I always hear people talking about my dad and how he used to play back in his days. And he didn’t have the opportunities we have now, so I’m really excited to pursue it.”

She said some of her favourite players include Giannis Anteokounmpo, Elizabeth Cambage, and Jonquel Jones. And she admires the Los Angeles Sparks, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

She will study physiotherapy at the college.

The scholarship covers tuition, term fees, books, accommodation and meals, but she is still unable to afford (in full) payments for her passport, US visa, plane ticket, school registration, living and clothing expenses.

Her family has averaged the total amount of funds needed at US$ 3,285.

Her current coach – Adrian Joseph – has also set up FundMeTnT page.

It says, “Miss Lewis’ overall dream is to fly the TT flag internationally as she pursues her passion of playing basketball to eventually reach to the WNBA. This dream can be realised with your assistance.“We hereby ask for support of financial assistance to Miss Afrika Lewis. By doing so, you will become a part of a historical breakthrough in the world of female athleticism for TT. Those willing to assist can also contact the family at 705-9533.
