Lakshmi must abide by law

THE EDITOR: Lakshmi Girls Hindu College is a denominational school. It also receives funding from the State. For example, to pay all its teachers’ salaries and the salaries of some, if not all, of the administrative staff.

It also benefits from other income to take care of some school expenditure. However, of late the latter has been paid late by the Ministry of Education.

It seems logical that if the school accepts State funding that it must abide by State law. It’s also logical that the State’s law of non-discrimination must be of a higher order and must take precedence over the school’s code of conduct – in this case dress.

It is not Sat Maharaj’s personal home that the OJT teacher was trying to enter. It was a place of work where discrimination is not allowed, according to our laws.

It will be great if this matter is tested in our courts right up to the Privy Council, the same Privy Council that Maharaj won discrimination matters for his radio/television licences.
