Impressive nurses at PTU Clinic

THE EDITOR: Often we read or hear of unpleasant experiences by members of the public at the San Fernando General Hospital, be it ambulatory/emergency services, clinical outpatient healthcare, surgical procedures, inpatient care etc.

So deeply rooted in our paranoiac minds are these tales of horror, one is consumed with dread way before a visit.

As a recent recipient of healthcare at the little known PTU Clinic at the hospital, my own experience, thankfully, is in stark contrast to others. I therefore feel compelled to share.

The clinic is manned by three very efficient nurses under the watchful eye of the youthful Dr Ramkissoon. Nurses Nobbie, Sharlene and Karlene, truthfully, against my own expectations, displayed a high level of professionalism, enthusiasm and genuine human compassion for their patients.

My early Monday morning visits include listening to these nurses animatedly chatting about their weekend events while simultaneously engaging their patients, thus encouraging an atmosphere of comfort and care by removing any anxieties of uneasy patients.

I was particularly impressed with their ability to remember every patient’s name, while they dutifully took meticulous handwritten medical notes.

Caregivers face the same trials and tribulations of everyday living as we all do. The adverse working conditions they are greeted with daily at the “old” SFGH is disheartening, to say the least. Yet my overall experience following several visits was a satisfactory, positive one, thanks to this committed trio who gives true meaning to the esteemed nursing profession.

From careful observation, the healthcare system is simply overwhelmed, but based on my own experiences, devoted caregivers at that hospital under the stewardship of the SWRHA are genuinely trying given the limited resources.

My heartfelt thanks goes out to the hardworking staff of the PTU Clinic. I feel confident others, privileged to be part of this illustrious profession, would choose to emulate these three nurses’ strong work ethics by delivering quality healthcare to a grateful public.
