UTT and Govt had no choice

THE EDITOR: The recent dismissal of 11 UTT lecturers is truly unfortunate but I believe the university’s leadership and the Government were left with no choice but to take this course of action given the tough economic situation in the country.

Media reports indicate that the university is struggling to survive because it is overstaffed and for it to continue to provide quality, tertiary-level education to our citizens, the board of directors has had to let go these lecturers to ensure it remains in existence.

I do not think the board would have taken this action lightly and would have preferred that the 11 lecturers remained at the university but circumstances forced it to do otherwise.

I am confident that, in the long run, UTT will not only survive but will become even better by producing top-class university graduates who can compete with the best in the world.
