Police brace for reprisal killings

POLICE are now gathering evidence in the investigation into the shooting death of Phillip Basant, which includes CCTV footage taken from the area.

Police sources said yesterday they were taking statements with regard to the investigation, which is still in its initial stages. However CCTV taken from the area is being analysed. An autopsy is also expected to be performed today, to confirm the cause of Basant’s death.

While police have not ascertained a clear motive in Basant’s murder, police told Newsday they are looking into all avenues, including speculations that Basant’s murder may be connected to the murders of Sheron Sukhdeo who was killed on March 26 and Joshua Plaza who was killed on April 22. As a result police are bracing for reprisal killings in the area.

Basant was shot dead last Friday near his parents’ home – almost the same spot Sheron Sukhdeo, his brother-in-law was killed.
