Medical student needs counselling

THE EDITOR: A few days ago a young man, reported to be a medical student, damaged two statues in the Roman Catholic cathedral. It is alleged he had visions/voices that encouraged this act. It is good to know he has been forgiven.

What is unforgivable is that there is no report that he is now receiving psychiatric treatment. What has now come up for debate is that he should not be continuing his studies in medicine at this point in time as he is in need of counselling and medication. Urgently. Prayer alone cannot be the cure for mental illness.

Great emphasis has been placed on the fact that he is studying medicine. So what? He is ill. And, importantly, he might not be suited to continue along this career path because of the rigorous hours and years of studying necessary to qualify as a medical practitioner.
