Parents, get involved in your child’s education

THE EDITOR: The students of Tranquillity Secondary School have issued an apology via social media for their recent despicable and disgusting behaviour displayed in broad daylight on Frederick and Park Streets, Port of Spain.

Though commendable, I hold the view that parents must share blame for such incidents.

While there’s no doubt that teachers play an important role in instilling discipline and help shape the behaviour of students, let’s not forget that parental involvement in activities such as checking homework, attending school meetings, events, discussing discipline and good manners all influence students’ academic performance as well as their behaviour outside of the home.

It is said that parenting is the most important and challenging job for anyone.

However, as a former teacher I am also aware of the efforts of our teachers and the Ministry of Education to support parents through its Parenting in Education Programme.

Generally, not much is known of the work of the social workers, psychologists, guidance counsellors and other professionals of the Student Support Services Division of the ministry.

They encourage and support the critical role parents play in the education system and help to bridge the gap from home, school and the community.

Despite being out of the system, I am noticing a greater effort by the Ministry of Education to support and encourage more participation of parents and other stakeholders in the school environment.

There is also more support systems for parents as they support their children.

This is very commendable.

I encourage all parents to join a parent-teacher association, attend meetings, visit the school, take a greater interest in their child’s education and help to build a better school, community and TT.
