Fr Mohammed, a true champion

Although many people tarnished his name for working with those who were less fortunate and not of the same faith, the late Fr Rudy Mohammed was on Friday described as a champion by his loved ones.

Delivering the eulogy at Mohammed’s funeral service, Patrick Tam, a friend of Mohammed for more than 60 years said, “Even in his trying times Fr Mohammed still tried to help others, brought out the best in people and convert people to the church. He suffered for all of us. He was a champion to many of us at a time in our lives when we had none.”

The funeral took place at St Theresa’s RC Church, De Verteuil Street, Woodbrook.

Mohammed, the first born out of 13 siblings, was also described by one of his sister Doreen Moonsammy as a “tower of strength.”

She said her brother was a real, simple, quite and a hard-working person.

“Sunny had the ability to help others and worked tirelessly to ensure he did his best at everything he set out to do. He knew what suffering and physical pain was, and he always said he had to be a priest. He was a teacher, a mentor and an advisor. He made several sacrifices to help all of us,” Moonsammy said.

Addressing the congregation, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Harris encouraged people not to live their lives for show but to do things out of the goodness of their heart.

He said Fr Mohammed was a person who lived to help others and suffered plenty for his actions.

“People said all kinds of things about him, but he was a man who really loved the people. It did not matter whether they were good or bad, prostitutes or not, he was there for everyone.

“He was a man who was there for everybody. We need more priests like that in the church,” Harris said.
