CIC on alert after prison officer’s murder

STUDENTS of St Mary’s College (CIC) on Frederick Street, Port of Spain are being told by teachers to exercise extreme caution as they make their way to and from the school on weekdays, and to walk in groups, after prison officer Devendra Boodooram was shot dead mere metres away last week Friday.

Sources at the school said security staff has been beefed up and stricter regulations have been implemented to mitigate against threats.

Boys are also advised against waiting outside the school for their parents, and students wishing to buy lunch must be accompanied by teachers.

Newsday tried to contact principal Nigel Joseph for comment, but was unsuccessful.

In light of last week’s killing, students of the school say they are concerned and their parents have contemplated not sending them to school out of fear for their safety.

Girls at St Joseph’s Convent, which is between Pembroke and Abercromby Streets, also expressed concern and said similar security restrictions had been implemented.
