Looks like we need help to tackle crime

THE EDITOR: We are living in a time in which no one appears to have the answer to crime. Even though we don’t manufacture firearms, we still see a proliferation of all types of weapons, more sophisticated that what our protective services carry.

It has become painfully obvious that the coast guard isn’t up to par. Occasionally, I would read of marijuana seizures. The real money is in guns and cocaine. So how does that pass through? Are these criminals just allowed to pass through? The protective services must set up sting operations at all ports of entry, all the tributaries. It’s not rocket science. The criminals send in the first boat, and if the coast is clear they call in the second boat with the contraband. Of course, having a “fast black boat” is a plus.

It looks like we need external help. Uncle Sam is doing a pretty good job of defending the US. We need to follow people who know what to do.

The only words I hear are “We not going to tolerate that,” “We not going to stand for that,” or “We will catch the perpetrators and bring them to justice.” It’s like the response is recorded.

We have an average of two murders a day, without the Government, Opposition or the one per cent and speaking out. It’s as if everyone has suddenly become dumb.

We pay way too much for security in this country. This should be tax deductible. Then maybe the Government will act. But we “haven’t rioted as yet.”

On another note, business owners, please put a sign at your doors warning, “No hats allowed,” just like the banks. You must have cameras focused at head level so people entering your premises will be clearly recorded, and when those guys come in with hats, pretending to be “on their phones,” it’s time to act.

As Sun Tzu, the great military strategist, once said, “To know your enemy, you must become your enemy.” Think like a bandit. We cannot sit by like lambs to the slaughter. We need a plan.

The Government is obviously impotent. Imagine a talk show host is now boasting of “carrying out sting” operations. In my day that was interfering with a “police operation.”

Trinidad is a land devoid of heroes and every Tom, Ian or Edward will become the promised saviour to the people.

God help us.
