Fiery protests halted at New Grant,Moruga

Residents of New Grant and Moruga took a decision to stop fiery protests in their communities yesterday after promises from their MP Dr Lovell Francis to have the issues resolved as early as possible.

“I will be working with the Ministry of Works and Transport to get the issues addressed. These issues such as roads and drains fall under the purview of the Works Ministry,” Francis said.

Residents from Moruga and Sixth Company Village, New Grant staged protests from Monday to Thursday over deplorable road conditions and major landslips. On Thursday residents of Indian Walk, Moruga, burned debris in the road in the hope that the authorities would resume major repairs.

Francis said he had a meeting on Thursday with residents at Sixth Company. That same evening, he said, he spoke with Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan, who agreed that work would soon start.
